Genomic Assessment of Giraffes in North America
Our collaborative study published in Journal of Heredity presents the first whole‑genome analysis of 52 giraffes in North American ex situ collections, comparing them to wild representatives of all four recognized species. The research reveals extensive hybridization among captive giraffes, mostly between northern and reticulated lineages, reducing their value as conservation assurance populations. These findings underscore the need for updated breeding strategies and international cooperation to establish genetically relevant conservation stocks that reflect true wild species diversity.

Our latest open‑access study published in Animals establishes the first comprehensive baseline of key metabolic, reproductive, and stress hormones in free‑ranging African elephants. By comparing glucose, insulin, leptin, cortisol, and reproductive hormones across age, sex, and season in wild populations, this research offers critical reference points that can help zoos refine diet, exercise, and social management to more closely mirror natural physiological patterns - potentially improving body condition and fertility in elephants under human care.
